I loved this. Sorry I just found this essay. Do people not remember how they were at certain age? I remember! It’s just a matter of playing the music of that year. So I can tell my now 10 year old how things happened for me, but I was a very rational kid. No drama. If anything, I was set on making it clear that I wasn’t another stupid, boy-crazy teenager. I acted as grown up as I could. My husband was also very chill. I wonder if it’s better to just share the variety of ways you can be so they know is up to them, they are still themselves. They are not taking over by something they can’t at all control, because that sounds terrifying. No change comes that suddenly either, and not all of it happens at the same time. And then different people experience some changes at different ages, so if anything is having patience with yourself and others. But you are so right! My father was very careful about this. He would yell “the mailman is here!” When I was a toddler I couldn’t understand why he said it if the mailman wasn’t anywhere to be found. Soon it was clear he meant he wanted to change the subject because I was listening and didn’t want to affect me or let me hear them talking about me. Now I’m grateful for that.
